Even a paranoid can have enemies.
-Henry Kissinger, Time, January 24, 1977.
In this chapter we first provide the necessary background on security, oriented towards internetwork mobility. The security services provided by CDPD are discussed next. Although we begin our discussion with a general description of security concepts and issues, it is not our intention to provide a complete description of security technology. Rather, our objective in this chapter is to provide background information about security issues in the mobile WAN in general and CDPD in particular.
Security is a highly specialized field with its own well defined terminology, structure and discipline. Much of the background information presented in this section is based on Security Architecture of OSI Reference Model and Authentication Framework of X.509. For readers interested in more formal and detailed discussions of security technology, excellent presentations can be found in works such as [KAUF95].
We close this chapter with a discussion of CDPD's security considerations.
