This chapter has presented the CDPD network access mechanism. The Medium Access Control and Logical Link Control protocols and procedures were described, as was the Subnetwork Dependent Convergence function and Radio Resource Management in CDPD systems. A brief discussion of the Circuit Switched CDPD system concept and protocols was also presented as an important extension to the packet-switched native mode of operation.
Our goal in this discussion was to provide the reader with some insight into
how the CDPD devices (M-ES and CM-ES) access the network and maintain a
connection. Now that we have presented the basic data carriage capabilities
of CDPD, we shall next move on to CDPD support services, beginning with
security features.
